pictures

Alright, I'm back at Kofe Hauz.
Today was fairly tame.
We went to a terrible "modern" reproduction/bastardization of Romeo and Juliet. Then a couple of us grabbed potatoes and ham sandwiches for lunch. Then I took a nap until 8 in the evening!
So here are all my new sweet pics from the day:

This is Susan and my delicious breakfast. (It's cheese sausage in lavash.)

We're staying at Godzillas Hostel.

This is the sign in our kitchen at Godzillas Hostel. This cabinet is NOT for trash.

This is a Gazprom bus. Gazprom is a Russian company and the third largest gas-based economy in the world, coming in after Saudi Arabia and some other country - and it's only ONE COMPANY. As it is (I forget, either largely or entirely) state-owned, some people claim it is becoming the Kremlin's means of black-mailing satellite states (cf disputes with Georgia, Ukraine, and the most recent one with Belarus).

This is perhaps the shoddiest schoolbus I've ever seen in my life.

Another thing I think is quirky about Russia: You can't drink the water, and brushing your teeth with a water bottle sucks.
There is this really smelly old man who looks like Rasputin who apparently lives in the hostel we're staying at. He doesn't speak any English, but rambles on and on and on about anything in Russian. He kept one of the guys for two hours talking about how porn is bad. He talked to "Mars Robinson" for about an hour this morning about how modern Russia is a sham and how Chekhov is terrible and doesn't reflect the Russian soul. This sentiment was also repeated to me, when I was trying to read and had turned off the TV in the TV room. Smelly Rasputin came in and turned the TV on to the communist channel "Nostalgia" and started talking about God-knows-what in Russian. Then he left again. I turned the TV back off, and then he came back in and turned it on again.

You have now had an "authentic" Russian experience! Believe it or not, I really miss exactly this sort of random encounter with an opinionated (and even slightly crazy) Russian.

Hmmm... interesting...
You must feel you have enough "free speech" to mention black-mailing satellite states....

Are you finding your Russian is good enough to deal with most situations?
